Common questions about SSL certificates
An SSL certificate enables HTTPS and helps encrypt data exchanged between your website and visitors’ browsers. It does not replace protection against malware, vulnerable software or unauthorised access.
Browsers may display “Not secure” when a page uses HTTP instead of HTTPS. Installing a valid SSL certificate and configuring your website to use HTTPS helps resolve this. Certificate errors can also trigger security warnings, so purchasing a certificate alone is not enough—it must be correctly installed and configured.
Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. Enabling HTTPS supports your website’s SEO, but it does not guarantee higher rankings. Buying a more expensive certificate does not provide an extra SEO advantage.
